Kim Kardashian Wins Bids for Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry (Recap) antiMUSIC.com December 18 2011
Many gold jewelry products currently marketed to Vietnamese consumers as Italian imports are in fact Chinese-faked products of dubious gold purity, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.
Such products have won many consumers over thanks to their sophisticated and attractive designs and their competitive prices, compared with the locally-made counterparts.
However, insiders in the jewelry industry said the products are not made in Italy but are in fact manufactured in China and brought into the country through the informal cross-border trade between Vietnam and China, under fake Italian brands.
“Authentic Italian jewelries are far more costly,” a jewelry maker was quoted by Nguoi Lao Dong as saying.
For fans wishing to show their love of Star Trek, a new line of Star Trek-themed jewelry will help them do so fashionably.
The collection, which became available yesterday and will be sold on Amazon, has been created by jewelry designer Udi Behr and includes bracelets, necklaces and rings.
Designer Behr has created jewelry collections for other television shows, such as The L Word, The Real L World, Dexter and True Blood, as well as for the band Queen for the “Love – Made in Heaven, The Freddy Mercury Collection.” His designs have been worn by celebrities such as Elton John, Ringo Starr, Cyndi Lauper, Paris Hilton, Brittney Spears and others.
'World's Most Beautiful Girl' And Producer Mark Hellinger Among Hollywood's Early Glamour Couples
Pieces from the Gladys Glad Jewelry Collection are featured in Heritage's fine jewelry auction scheduled for Dec. 5, 2011, in Dallas.
A highlight is Glad's Retro Diamond, Ruby, Platinum, Gold Jewelry Suite by Merrin of New York. The lot includes the original artwork for the earring design. "This collection represents wonderful mid-century jewelry design," says Jill Burgum, Heritage's director of fine jewelry. "It is a great chance to own a piece of history from a woman voted 'most beautiful woman in the world.'"
New village resident Matt Cole uses an original material for his hand-crafted jewelry: bowing balls. An avid bowler, Cole has for the past several years designed earrings, bracelets and pendants from the richly colored outer layer of the balls.
His jewelry can be found online at his Web site. www.matt-cole.com. At this time, it is not available at local stores.
A bowler since age 6, Cole has for years thought that bowling balls might make excellent jewelry, he said in a recent interview. He decided to try out his idea several years ago when the price of precious metals spiked, and he sought a new material for his original designs. He spent a year teaching himself to cut apart the balls and shape the material into gem-like forms, and then began producing his bowling ball creations.

UBM to Hold Mumbai Jewellery & Gem Fair in December
Oct 7, 2011 9:40 pmBy UBM
Press Release: Following in the footsteps of two
successful fairs that take place in Hyderabad and Chennai annually, it’s
all systems go for the launch of the Mumbai Jewellery & Gem Fair,
which will take place this year from December 9 to December 11 at the
Bombay Exhibition Centre in India.
Mumbai - An International Jewelry Hub
The
Mumbai Fair is “a direct response to the market, which has requested
that UBM come to Mumbai with a show timed in December, just before for
the key buying season, which is at the beginning of the year,'' said
Jimé Essink, the president of UBM Asia Ltd. ''The market recognizes the
unmatched quality and professionalism of UBM’s jewelry events in India
and around the world,'' Essink said.
Mumbai is the richest city
and the financial capital of India, which is one of the world’s fastest
growing economies and has an established reputation as a leading
manufacturer of fine jewelry, diamonds and gemstones. The value of
India’s jewelry exports increased by 47 percent year on year, top buying
countries being the United Arab Emirates (UAE), China and the U.S.
Also, the domestic market continues to grow, despite the current global
economic environment India’s GDP is expected to grow by over 8 percent
for the year 2011.
The Mumbai show’s sister event in Hong Kong is
the world’s largest jewelry event – the last edition of the Hong Kong
Jewellery & Gem Fair hosted more than 3,300 exhibitors and 44,000
visitors from 135 countries.
UBM already organizes the two
leading shows in the south of India, namely the Gem & Jewellery
India International Exhibition (GJIIE) in Chennai and the Hyderabad
Jewellery, Pearl & Gem Fair (HJF). Together, these shows now attract
more than 18,000 buyers. The organizer expects the debut Mumbai edition
to feature 300 exhibitors and attract 8,000 to 10,000 visitors.
''The
Mumbai Jewellery & Gem Fair will be a comprehensive B2B jewelry
event providing gemstone and jewelry manufacturers an invaluable
opportunity to meet potential customers and gather primary market
intelligence,'' UBM said. ''The month of December is also the best time
to visit the city since the weather is relatively cool and pleasant
during this period.'' Since the fair is scheduled after Diwali and
before the start of the wedding season, it effectively sets the tone for
2012’s stock purchase.
Someone You Should Know: Jewelry Artist Turns Nothing Into Something
Lemont resident Deb Wojnarowski shows off her skill for creating unique pieces of fine silver jewelry.
By
Hayley Smorczeski October 7th 2011
Handcrafted is not a word you hear too often these days, but it is
what Lemont resident and fine jewelry artist Deb Wojnarowski does.
Wojnarowski has an eye for finding beauty in just about any material.
Some examples include domino pieces, old refrigerator tubing and metal
washers, which are unrecognizable after being shaped into a necklace and
earrings set.
She explained that she works mostly with a material called metal
clay, which is a combination of recycled silver materials, organic clay
and binders. After the material has been torched and molded into one of
her beautiful pieces of jewelry, what is left, she said, "is 99.9
percent fine silver."
As a teenager, watching her mother run a from-home jewelry business allowed Wojnarowski to learn the tricks of the trade.
Mostly self taught through observation and a bit of playing around
with her mother's tools and materials, Wojnarowski also studied the art
form at the College of DuPage and currently teaches custom classes from her home.
Want to see if you are the right person for one of Wojnarowski's unique silver jewelry pieces? Check her out at fussyfinery.com or e-mail her at deb@fussyfinery.com.

Matt Hinshaw/The Daily Courier Jack Messersmith helps Kate Burk, 8, pick out a set of earrings at his booth during the 8th annual Prescott Gem and Mineral Show at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
PRESCOTT - Jack Messersmith of Prescott Valley has been rock-hounding since the early 1980s in San Diego, and, as long as collecting stays fun for him, he's going to keep doing it for the long haul.
Messersmith and his wife, Kathy, were among more than two dozen vendors who shared their various rocks and jewelry with the public Saturday during the eighth annual Prescott Gem and Mineral Show at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
"I've gone from Washington (state) back to Arkansas and anywhere in between collecting and buying (rocks and stones)," said Messersmith, a retired sailor, from his booth in the early afternoon. "I enjoy getting in the backcountry."
But one of Messersmith's primary pursuits is hunting for gold.

Strong Jewelry Orders, Diamond Sells Fair at IIJS
(August 6, '11, 8:02 Edahn Golan, Mumbai)
(IDEX Online News) – The halls of the IIJS fair ground are full this weekend. Buyers, predominantly Indians, are showing great interest in the diamond jewelry offerings and jewelers' booths are full.
Indian retailers are expecting good business in the near future, expressing their confidence in buying a wide range of jewelry items.
The booths of loose diamond traders were less active, reflecting concerns that polished diamond prices may have gone too far. The sentiment is so strong that rough prices softened in response.
In the days just before IIJS opened, polished prices declined by about 3 percent across the board. Now traders are trying to hold on to those prices, however it is not clear how long that would last.
Large demands are noted for -2 and stars. After traders were willing to let go of 2-3 percent, these items are selling very well.
Celebrity Hotspots: Rihanna in Barbados and B-town Shines at the Jewelry Show! Desi Hits!
Saturday August 06, 2011
Rihanna was seen in her home country of Barbados over this past weekend. The curvy queen of the music scene was caught on camera while she was at the beach wearing a teeny white string bikini. Why not, when you’ve got a body as rock-hard as hers—she can wear anything [or in this case, next-to-nothing] and look phenomenal.
August 05, 2011 10.20 PST
For a Kadooment Day parade held on Monday, August 1 in Barbados, Rihanna was seen wearing another, much more decorated bikini. Kadooment Day is the last day of the Crop Over traditional festival. For the event, thousands of Barbarians join different bands with members dressed in detailed costumes.
As far as Bollywood radar goes, all of the east side celebrities were seen at the India International Jewelry Week this weekend. A few especially familiar faces included Bollywood babes Sonam Kapoor, Lara Dutta, and Bipasha Basu.
What was once a hobby is now her part-time business. One day Chelsea Kolakowski was walking down the street – and it just hit her. She saw women wearing costume jewelry and thought she could replicate those pieces – maybe even make them better, she said. The 27-year-old Astoria-based designer is an assistant for a CEO in the music merchandising industry. While she enjoys her job, her daily tasks don’t challenge her to be creative.
The “Treasure Trove of Gems” jewelry, gem and mineral show will come to the Orangevale Community Center for the third year in a row this weekend.
At least 20 percent of the proceeds from this year’s trade show will go to benefit local charity Project Illumination, according to Roseville resident and show organizer John Moulder.
“After my costs from producing the show, the remainder of it goes to the charity,” Moulder said. “This is my opportunity to give back to some of the people who have helped support us over the years.”
Project Illumination is a Sacramento-area charity that provides resources to disadvantaged young adults by providing assistance with the costs of a college education.
Moulder, who is a former board member of the Roseville Rock Rollers Gem & Mineral Society, said the show is aimed at people who want to learn about beading, rock hounding, jewelry making, stone cutting and more.
More than 20 vendors are expected at the event, including internationally-known gem, mineral, jewelry and fossil dealers.
What: “Treasure Trove of Gems” gem, jewelry and mineral show
When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday

Soon to be launched ethical brand Chavin is hoping to prove that ethics can be an integral part of large-scale jewellery manufacturing.
The brand, which is the brainchild of Simon Ogilvie-Harris, has been set up in response to a growing demand for ethical jewellery.
“It is all well and good buying from artisanal mining businesses or using Fairtrade [Fairmined] gold, which I understand there is a waiting list for, but on a large commercial scale this is not practical,” said Ogilvie-Harris. “We need to see how we can make a commercial brand like Chavin ethical and stick to those principles.”
Integral to this is the brand’s partnership with SOS Children, the world’s largest orphan and abandoned children’s charity. Chavin is committed to donating a percentage of revenues to SOS as well as setting up long-term skills transfer programmes in Lima, Peru so that mothers have a way to support themselves and their children.
“Chavin jewellery has worked closely with SOS Children to find new and exciting ways to support women in Peru. The mothers on our Luz y Vida project [which works to improve the economic situation of local families] are excited to be part of this innovative partnership,” said Meryl Davies director of fundraising at SOS Children.

Love gold jewelry, but not a fan of high price tags? Clinton Hill resident Delilah Mulraine, designer of Masani Wearable Sculptures, has just the collection for you. Her new line, The Brass Construction, was unveiled at Primitive Designs Boutique in Bed Stuy on Sunday. Customers snatched up Mulraine’s necklaces while also browsing her unique shimmering yellow earrings and bracelets.
“Brass is not as pricey as gold, but it looks just as expensive,” said Mulraine. “The color pairs well with evening outfits, especially over black.”
Mulraine decided to design brass pieces for the first time not just because of their flashy appearance; the material is easy to heat and manipulate, allowing Mulraine to create her new line in only two and a half weeks.

Currently Coveting: AF House's tiny animal jewelry
May 16, 2011 | 8:39am
When we first saw AF House's miniature
gold animal pendants and jewelry, we wondered if we were the sort of
girls who could carry off tiny gold piglets tacked to our earlobes.
But we reasoned that said piggies (and horseys and owls) are rendered
in such a stylized way that there's no mistaking them for mere kids'
stuff.
The 14-karat gold and sterling silver collection, which is priced
from $100 to $300 (so wallet friendly!), was designed by Akiko
Fuchigami, who started her career in the public relations department of
Issey Miyake, and later handled the launch of the Tsumori Chisato brand
in Tokyo.
AF
House, which boasts the tagline "Modern charms with taste and style for
men and women," was recently picked up by Fred Segal in Los Angeles,
and counts Mary-Kate Olsen, Heidi Klum and Susan Sarandon amongst its
famous fans.
The cutesie, cool line includes stud earrings, thin cuff bracelets
and necklaces — all bearing Fuchigami's quirky, curvacious little
animals.
Because the looks are relatively affordable, they make for sweet
birthday gifts for gals of all ages. And their daintiness renders them
great daily-wear for all stylish animal lovers.
Lynchburg woman named among world's best jewelry artists New Era Progress Monday, May 16, 2011

Liz McCormack has sold handmade rings, bracelets and

Iris Apfel, the octogenarian who makes stylish grannies the world over want to raise their game, has announced that
she is to launch a jewellery line. Although her taste in clothes is so
remarkable that she has already had a museum exhibition devoted to her

before designed a fashion collection, which goes to show it’s never too
late – as she’s 88 years old. This one is for the Home Style Network, and will be out in September.
Iris
made her name in the fashion and textiles world, working as a fashion
journalist at WWD and later as an interior designer in the upper
echelons of American society. She is a style icon for her singular
taste, unbelievable archive of vintage designer clothes and her refusal
to dress in boring clothes, even as she approaches her ninth decade.

Paris -- Burglars PAWNED My EXPENSIVE Jewelry
4/11/2011 4:16 AM PDT by TMZ Staff
If you're in the market for some authentic USED Paris Hilton
jewelry -- check your local pawn shop ...
because the Burglar Bunch
HOCKED all of the super-expensive stuff they stole from her house ... so
says the heiress.
Paris and her BF Cy Waits were on their way in to Boa last night ... when PH told us, "[The Burglar Bunch] pawned
everything that was real ... they only gave me back the costume stuff."
It's a BIG STATEMENT -- because just last week, Hilton was sued by an insurance
company for not
returning $60,000 in jewelry she borrowed from Damiani Jewellers back
in 2007 ... jewelry that was jacked from Hilton's home by the Burglar
Bunch.
The company thinks Hilton is LYING about not being in
possession of the bling -- because they believe cops recovered the
Damiani pieces and gave it back to Paris ... who then FAILED to give it
back to Damiani.
The company also alleges Hilton agreed to keep
the jewelry in a safe when she wasn't wearing it ... but instead of
locking it up, Paris simply tucked it away in her closet.

incredible work and life story that I knew immediately I wanted to be
involved. I created a small collection using the poetry she has on her
ring as well as other poems about resiliency and courage. These pieces
are for women to wear to show solidarity with women all over the globe
who are fighting for equality and their rightful place in society."
Galpin founded Mountain2Mountain in 2006. A rape survivor and a single mother from Breckenridge, Colorado,
she realized she couldn't sit on the sidelines in a world where so many
women and girls are denied opportunities, treated as commodities and
live most of their lives in fear. She sold her home and has since
devoted all of her energies to working with women and girls in Afghanistan.
"I believe that
investing in women and girls is the most effective way to achieve
stability and economic prosperity, especially in warzones like Afghanistan
where sexual assault, and oppression are so prevalent and opportunity
has been denied to women and girls for so long," said Galpin. Gifts
from her family, Galpin wears Payer's ring and earrings as on all of her
trips to Afghanistan.

Ban in Zimbabwe Diamonds

Swiss Development Group Calls for Countrywide Ban in Zimbabwe Diamonds
The Marange diamond field Photo by Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi, AP
A Swiss
international development organization has urged its government to ban
trade in diamonds from Zimbabwe's controversial Marange field because of
continued reports of human rights violations, according to the Ecumenical News International.
Bread For All,
the Development Service of the Protestant Churches in Switzerland, said
the diamonds should not have a market in Switzerland based on reports
of ongoing human rights abuses by its local partner, the Zimbabwe Advocacy Office.
Marlon
Zakeyo, who heads the Zimbabwe Advocacy Office in Geneva, told ENI,
that the ban in Switzerland is important because the country is a center
for jewelry and watches, it is known for protecting human rights and it
is a partner of the Kimberly Process,
which is charged with preventing trade in “blood” of “conflict”
diamonds—terms used to describe diamonds mined in a war zone and sold to
finance an insurgency, invading army's war efforts, or a warlord's
activity.
In
addition, the two organizations said the definition of the terms
“blood” or “conflict” diamonds should be updated by the KP to include
human rights violations by forces of the state. The groups say the
present definition refers to rebel forces, a loophole that had allowed
the Zimbabwean government to sell Marange diamonds internationally under
Kimberley Process supervision.
If
Switzerland agrees to ban the diamonds, it will be the first country to
do so. However, they will join a growing list of diamond dealers and
jewelry industry officials who will not buy diamonds from Zimbabwe, most
notably the Rapaport Diamond Trading Network (RapNet), U.K. jewelry company MasterCut, and the Company of Masters Jewellers, the U.K. retail organization that is the exclusive buyer of MasterCut diamonds.
Beginning
in 2008, the Zimbabwe army took over the Marange fields forcing out
tens of thousands of small-scale miners. These miners were massacred by
soldiers and villagers have been beaten, raped and forced to work as
virtual slaves. The human rights abuses led to Zimbabwe being suspended
from the KP.
The
KP voted to temporarily reinstate Zimbabwe in July, allowing two
supervised exports of rough diamond from the Marange production held in August and September. However, the KP in November failed to reach an agreement
on whether Zimbabwe will be able to sell diamonds through the
organization’s certification scheme, a system that tracks diamond sales
from the mine to the market, which has led to a ban diamonds from the
Marange field.
Meanwhile,
Zimbabwean Mines Minister Obert Mpofu has threatened to sell diamonds
without Kimberley approval, saying Zimbabwe has met all of its
requirements.

JA announces new online “Find A JA Supplier” Directory
(NEW YORK) - Jewelers of America (JA), the national
trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry retail
marketplace, has launched a new interactive directory exclusively
listing JA Supplier Member products and services in the “Retail Jeweler”
section of www.jewelers.org – the online resource for the professional
jewelry industry. Called “Find A JA Supplier,” the directory connects
the thousands of JA Retail Members - representing some of the nation’s
most respected jewelry firms - with the association’s growing base of
Supplier Members.
JA Retail Members can use the “Find A JA Supplier” directory to
easily find new products and services for their business needs from
professional jewelry businesses, including leading designers,
manufacturers and service organizations. “Find A JA Supplier” search
options include: company name, keyword and/or product and service
categories. JA Supplier Members are able to select the relevant
categories under which they wish to be featured in the directory.
“With a membership that consists of some of the most professional
jewelry businesses in the industry, it made sense to connect retail and
supplier businesses who share Jewelers of America’s commitment to
professional jewelry practices. The new ‘Find A JA Supplier’ directory
does just that, by allowing JA Retail Members to quickly find new
jewelry products and services from fellow JA Supplier Members,” explains
JA Chief Operating Officer Robert Headley.
The directory echoes JA’s popular “Find A JA Jeweler” search – which
allows consumers to search for JA Retail Members by name, keyword or
location.
What Did the Well-Dressed Neanderthal Wear? Jewelry
By
MICHAEL D. LEMONICK
Between
40,000 and 30,000 years ago, Neanderthals — the hulking, thick-skulled
species closely related to us — vanished from the earth, leaving us as
the last humans standing. Nobody knows for sure what happened to them.
Maybe we killed them off. Maybe we outcompeted them for scarce resources
during the waning
decades of the last Ice Age. Or maybe — though this is still hotly
debated — we simply mated with them, which would mean we all have a bit
of Neanderthal in
us.(See the top 10 scientific discoveries of 2009.)
Whatever wiped them out, though, a consensus has been growing for
years that it wasn't because the Neanderthals were short on raw
intelligence. Their brains
were as big as ours, and we've known for a century that they buried
their dead
just as we do; they also made stone tools, and theirs have been found in
association with painted shells and other baubles. But maybe there was a
subtler
difference in our brains. Some paleoanthropologists have said that when
our ancestors made jewelry, for example, it implied the ability to think
symbolically — that the adornment represented individuality or status.
If the
Neanderthals did this, according to the idea, they were just imitating
the
modern humans who co-existed with them in Europe, sort of like a child
playing
dress-up. (See a Q&A with Donald C. Johnson, the discoverer of "Lucy.")
But a new paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences makes
that argument a lot harder to sustain. João Zilhão of the University of
Bristol, along with several colleagues, has uncovered Neanderthal jewelry from
two caves in southern Spain dating to about 50,000 years ago. "This," says
Zilhão, "is 10,000 years before modern humans arrived. There is no question
that Neanderthals are their makers."
The objects in question consist mostly of seashells, many of them pierced,
with bits of pigment on them.
Diamond divas are drooling at the latest
natural colored diamond to go on the block. Why all the fuss? This one could
break the record for the most expensive stone ever sold!
From
Canada's
pink diamond record-breaker to the recent display of the
Kazanjian Red Diamond, natural
colored diamonds are making big news these days. But one rosy rock is set to put
them all to shame when it goes on the block at Sotheby's "Magnificent Jewels"
auction in Geneva on November 16th.
Why? Because the stone has a pre-sale estimate of $27-$38 million - a price
range that could easily break the record set by the
Wittelsbach
Blue Diamond back last year, which sold for just over $24 million.
The 24.78-carat Fancy Intense Pink diamond was last seen on the market 60
years ago when it was purchased from Harry Winston. The emerald-cut stone is
mounted in a ring and is part of the 'Type IIa' classification, a rare type of
stone that represents less than two percent of all of the world's diamonds.
The
largest single piece of naturally occurring gold in the
world,
known as the "Hand of Faith" weights nearly 62lbs and
was found in 1980 by an Australian man with a metal
detector. The
Golden Nugget Casino purchased the huge gold nugget for a
million
dollars. The nugget was found only six inches below the
surface
of the earth, making it a very spectacular find indeed.
On 31 May 2000, the Golden Nugget (and all of Steve Wynn's other
properties) was sold to Kirk Kerkorian; the consolidated corporation was known as
MGM
Mirage and has been the largest casino corporation in Las Vegas
since that date.
Although the Golden Nugget was profitable, it was not part of the
master expansion plan of the corporation which was focused on
consolidating a long stretch of the strip by acquiring Mandalay Resort
Group, building City Center, and beginning construction in Macau.
World's Largest Pearl
Osama bin Laden tried to purchase the world's largest pearl, the
Pearl of Allah, as a gift to Saddam Hussein "to unite the Arab
cultures," and Hussein was prepared to accept, according to the pearl's
owner.
Victor Barbish, who owns 66 percent of the pearl on behalf
of his daughter, (Peter
Hoffman is co-owner), told World Net Daily he received an offer in
1999 from individuals who said they were "from bin Laden's group" to
purchase the pearl of allah for $60 million to give to Hussein as an
overture of unity between al-Qaida and the Iraqi government.
Pearl of Allah
The Pearl of Allah, (Pearl of Lao-Tse) the largest pearl on record, was
recovered from a giant clam on May 7, 1934, off the coast of Palawan
Island, Philippines. The pearl is 9.4 inches long and weighs about 14
lbs. According to the "Guinness Book of Records," the San Francisco Gem
Laboratory has valued the pearl at $40 million. The Muslim diver who
found the pearl said its surface bore the image of a turbaned face, and
he named it the Pearl of Allah. It measures 9.45 inches in diameter and weighs
14.1lbs. It is approximately 31,893.5 carats. It was given to an American (Wilburn
Cobb), as a token of gratitude for his life saving
measures of
the Palawan Village Chief's son. The pearl has had many
potential
buyers, but currently remains in the ownership of the

Rarest Mineral on Earth
Source
(Wikipedia)
Painite
is described by the Guinness Book of World Records as the
rarest
gem mineral on earth. In 2005 there were only 18 known
specimens,
which were all numbered and accounted for. The image shown
here
is specimen number 5 and weighs in at 2.54 carats. Painite
is pink
to red or brown and shows many different hues from
different angles.
Furthermore, it glows green under shortwave UV light. It
is mainly
found in Mogok and Kachin State in Myanmar. Because it is
exceedingly
rare, it is considered priceleless. It was first found in Myanmar by british mineralogist and gem dealer Arthur C.D. Pain in the 1950s. When it was confirmed as a new mineral species, the mineral was named after him.
Jeweleye, an extravagant way and edgy style for those who love body piercing, tattos. This procedure would become the next frontier in cosmetic body modification.
Eye Surgeons at the Netherlands Institute for innovative ocular surgery implats a little pieces of jewelry called jeweleye under the tissue of the eye. Inserting a 3.5 mm (0.13 inch) wide specially developed; the shapes includes half moon, hearts, sun, etc. It can be molded to any kind of shapes made of platinum inserted into the eye's mucous membrane under local anesthetic at a cost of 500 to 1,000 euros (900.00 u.s.).
"In
my view it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of
a fun thing and a very personal thing for people," said Gerrit Melles,
director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery.
It turns out that the experts in the industry on eye jewelry have
thought this thing through and assure us that there is no danger from
it. It doesn't affect the surface area of the lens at all actually, and
going blind I don't think is a danger unless of course you get punched
in the eye hard enough for this to pop out and damage the lens itself.
It's actually a pretty old art form so it's a perfected and evolved
procedure at this point
Check out the video but be warned that it is very graphic.
